Car find car after bridge plunge

11:26 pm on 7 June 2012

Police say they have found a car which plunged from a Hamilton bridge into the Waikato River.

They sighted the car 40 metres downstream from the bridge on Thursday afternoon.

Police say the vehicle was travelling east on the Pukete Bridge in St Andrews when it went into the river, and they have searching for it and the people in it at the time since Wednesday night.

Inspector Leo Tooman says when the car was taken out of the river, no body was found inside.

He says the police dive squad will keep looking for signs of the driver, and they're trying to trace the registered owner of the vehicle.

Inspector Tooman says the police suspect the car's driver was the only person in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
