Child abuser may get parole after 45 years of jail

New Zealand's longest-serving inmate could be set for a prison release as early as August.

Alf Vincent has spent 45 years in jail and the Parole Board says he has a long history of sexual offending.

Vincent has confessed to abusing more than 100 children in the past, and has 13 convictions for the crimes.

An official report last year said the 74-year-old's chances of release looked bleak.

But a fresh Parole Board report released on Thursday says Vincent has been offered a lifelong place in newly-opened Salvation Army accommodation.

Board members will see Vincent again in August to determine whether he could be released into the accommodation with strict restrictions.
