No hotels for homeless during World Cup - mayor

A claim that Auckland City Council may consider putting the homeless up in hotels and motels during the 2011 Rugby World Cup is nonsense, mayor John Banks says.

The council has approved a $33.8 million package for the event, with $20,000 to help the homeless.

Auckland City Councillor Glenda Fryer says it appears the money has been ear-marked to relocate the homeless into accommodation during the tournmanent.

But Mr Banks says this is not true, and the council will be working with the City Mission, churches and volunteers to look after homeless people.
