An elderly woman is in a critical condition after being shot in the head in South Auckland.
Police were called to an address in Druces Road in Manukau at about 1.30am on Saturday after reports a woman, aged 60, had been assaulted.
When the victim was taken to hospital it was discovered she had a bullet lodged in her head.
Doctors said that the bullet needs to be removed sugically and the woman remains in a critical condition.
Police say they have located a firearm and a shell casing.
A man, also 60, has been charged with assault and appeared on Saturday in Manukau District Court where he was remanded in custody until Monday.
Police have not ruled out laying more serious charges.
