Drunk speeding driver in 'preventable' fatal crash

A coroner's report into the death of four people in a Hawke's Bay crash has found the driver was drunk, speeding and on the wrong side of the road when he crashed.

Watson Tipu was nearly three times over the limit and speeding along State Highway 2 on Mohaka Hill in January when he crossed the centre line and crashed into another vehicle.

Mr Tipu and three of his passengers, Zyah Marsh, Kennedy Weir, and Raimon Keefe, died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The three were not wearing seatbelts. A fourth passenger in the front seat, who was wearing a seatbelt, survived.

In his findings, Coroner Chris Devonport says that fact speaks for itself, and all the deaths were preventable.
