Strong northwest winds are buffeting southern Wairarapa, and MetService is predicting more gusts of up to 120 kilometres an hour on Monday evening.
MetService has issued a severe weather warning for the region where high winds could damage trees, power lines and insecure roofs.
Winds are likely to ease after 8pm.
It is also warning that driving on, and near, the Rimutaka Hill Road could be difficult for some vehicles and motorbikes.
