School board going to court to stop closure

An intermediate school in Bay of Plenty is taking the Ministry of Education to the High Court in a attempt to stop the school's closure.

The Government last year decided to shut Kawerau Intermediate and merge it with Kawerau College, creating a new school on the college site from the start of next year.

Kawerau Intermediate board of trustees says the Government never took the community's wishes into account when it decided to close the school.

It says the principal and board chair met Education Minister Hekia Parata on Thursday, but she was not open to changing her mind, leaving the board with no option but to go to the High Court in Rotorua on Monday.
