New super ministry launched

9:10 pm on 1 July 2012

The sign at the front of the now defunct Ministry of Economic Development has already changed, before staff in the Government's new super ministry arrive at work on Monday.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment formally started on Sunday after the merger of the Ministry of Economic Development, Department of Labour, which has been in existence for 121 years, Ministry of Science and Innovation and Department of Building and Housing.

Its Minister Steven Joyce says it is already having an impact, with better interaction between economic development and science and innovation.

He says agency officials have said they're finding it easier to get across areas of work than they did previously.

Mr Joyce says that's an opportunity to streamline and simplify work which will be good for businesses.

The Public Service Association says it is a time of great uncertainty for the 3200 employees involved and job security is a major concern.
