Two fires were being fought in separate parts of Wellington on Monday night.
Eight appliances attended a two-storey house fire at Koromiko Road, in the suburb of Highbury.
There are no reports of any injuries.
The other fire was reported from a Roberts Street house, in the suburb of Tawa, where St John ambulance is treating people for minor injuries.
Fire Service shift manager Jan Wills says neither fire was under control late on Monday night.
