A three-year-old child has died after an accident outside a church in the Lower Hutt suburb of Stokes Valley.
Senior Sergeant Darren Russell says the child was hit by a car outside the church around 3pm on Sunday.
He says the Serious Crash Unit has examined the vehicle and the scene, and the driver is being spoken to.
The fatality brings the total of deaths on the road over Labour Weekend to three.
Two young men died when the car they were passengers in crashed near Aotea Quay in Wellington city on Saturday night.
The police say that if the holiday weekend road toll stays at three it'll be the same as 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2006.
The holiday road toll period finishes at 6am on Tuesday.
