Kidnap trial to open today

6:09 am on 28 October 2008

A trial of three people accused of kidnapping a boy in Hamilton in August 2006 opens in the High Court on Tuesday.

The boy, who was six at the time, can't be named or identified for legal reasons.

His mother, maternal grandfather and a family friend are charged with kidnapping.

The boy was in the custody of his father when he was taken from the Hamilton public library and disappeared for five months.

Extensive suppression orders were put in place at a preliminary hearing in September last year, including a ban on reporting the Crown's opening statement and all closing submissions.

In August last year, two people were sentenced to prison for detaining the boy at their home in Matauri Bay in Northland.
