Firefighters busy with North Island blazes

9:52 pm on 31 October 2008

Fire crews in the upper North Island were busy on Friday morning.

At least six crews fought a fire at a sawmill owned by Carter Holt Harvey in Whangarei.

The fire communications centre says the blaze broke out in an area of wood waste and scrub, just before 2am.

It is under control but crews remained at the scene dampening down hotspots.

And fire officers attended a house fire between Te Aroha and Matamata in the Waikato.

A 10-year-old South Auckland boy suffered burns to his ankle after getting caught in a house fire in Otara about 3.30am.

Police and fire safety officers are investigating a suspicious fire at the premises of the Lakeland Funeral Directors in Rotorua.
