Massey students struck down with stomach bug

9:22 am on 1 November 2008

More than 70 students are suffering from an outbreak of gastroenteritis at Massey University's Palmerston North campus.

The university says more than 60 students have been treated by the Medical Centre on site and many more are known to be unwell with the bug that can cause vomiting and diarrhea.

Students from each of the university's halls of residence are affected, as well as some living in Palmerston North.

The university's acting communications manager, Lindsey Birnie, says extra staff have been put on site to help combat the outbreak and they are working with the public health department.

Ms Birnie says extra cleaning measures have been put in place.
