An organiser of Saturday's Coromandel Peninsula K2 cycle race in which a man received head and spinal injuries in a pile up says better education is needed to avoid accidents of this kind.
Brett Burton, 43, was flown to hospital after being hit. The collision was apparently caused when cyclists were squeezed between a ute and a milk tanker.
Race organiser Rita Stephenson says education, particularly for drivers, is extremely important.
She says national events like the K2 cycle race are run on a very professional scale, but better education and awareness would improve safety for races and cycling in general.
