The number of long-term migrants to New Zealand was at its highest level in 16 months in June.

Statistics New Zealand figures show a seasonally adjusted net gain of 490 people for the month, the highest since February 2011.

This follows a revised increase of 200 migrants in May.

Most of the increase came from Britain, China and India.

On an annual basis, however, more people departed than arrived. A net migration loss of 3,191 was recorded.

About 40,000 people went to live and work in Australia for the year.

Separately, the number of tourists coming to this country rose 15% in June led by more visitors from Australia and China.

For the year, visitor numbers rose 5% percent to 2.6 million.
