Weather easing

1:06 pm on 24 July 2012

Bad weather which caused road closures in Coromandel on Monday eased overnight, although some roads remain shut and others are passable with care.

Slips and swollen rivers closed parts of State Highways Two and 26.

State Highway 25 between Coromandel and Whitianga remains shut due to a large slip.

Also closed are State Highway Two at Karangahake Gorge, west of Waihi and State Highway 26 between Te Aroha and Paeroa.

One lane of the road between Tauranga and Waihi is open again, but motorists have been told to expect delays.

MetService says the rain eased overnight, with no rain falling in Whitianga since 1am on Tuesday.

NZ Transport Agency acting state highway manager Karen Boyt says alternative routes are in place.

However, people who live near rivers in the Hauraki Plains are being urged to remain vigilant as water levels remain high.

The heavy rain has now moved to Gisborne where Civil Defence is keeping an eye on rivers and roads.
