Immigration failed to notice man had been deported

A man being deported to India was twice allowed back into the country and given a residence permit by immigration officials.

The New Zealand Immigration Service says its computer system had not been updated to show Kamal Kumar Chopra had been deported for his third drink-drive conviction in Napier.

He left the country voluntarily in May, but because his returning residence visa was not cancelled, he came back 11 days later.

He left again in June and was granted a fresh residence permit when he returned the following month.

The immigration service says it tightened its procedures after the errors came to light and that Chopra has since left New Zealand and will not be allowed back in.
