Auckland Council appears set to ask the Government to retain legislation permitting regional fuel taxes.
Its transport committee has accepted a report which contests the Government view that regional fuel taxes would be expensive to run and easy to dodge.
The council plans to examine a regional fuel tax, along with other options to raise extra funds for major transport projects in coming decades.
The report by the Ascari consultants says few people would cross Auckland's boundaries to buy cheaper fuel outside the region.
It says new systems being brought in by oil companies would make administration less expensive than previously thought.
