West Coast whitebaiting season ends

7:15 am on 15 November 2008

The whitebaiting season on the West Coast has come to an end, but rangers are on alert for anyone who flouts the rules and carries on fishing.

The season officially finished at 9pm on Friday and the Department of Conservation says baiters have enjoyed a bumper catch - the best for years.

DoC ranger for the Hokitika area, Ted Brennan, wants whitebaiters to call it a day.

He says the season ends to allow the more rare of the species to come up the rivers.

The whitebaiting season lasts until 30 November for the rest of New Zealand.
