New concussion protocol for rugby players

4:48 am on 3 August 2012

The New Zealand Rugby Union is to trial a new concussion protocol which it hopes will improve players' welfare.

The trial will be carried out during the ITM Cup, which begins in three weeks.

The new Pitch Side Concussion Assessment means the referee, the independent match doctor or the player's team doctor can recommend removing a player with suspected head injuries.

Once the player is sidelined, a five minute assessment procedure will be carried out.

If the player fails any aspect of the assessment and has relevant symptoms, they will not be able to return to the field.
