Legalisation of gay marriage seen as tourism draw

An Australian marriage equality group says New Zealand could become the wedding destination of choice for gay Australian couples if it legalises same-sex marriage.

A private member's bill to legalise gay marriage has been drawn from the ballot at Parliament, and when it comes before the House a conscience vote is expected.

The national convenor of Australian Marriage Equality, Alex Greenwich, says this country could be in for a tourism boom from gay Australian couples if the bill is passed.

Mr Greenwich says some currently travel as far as the Netherlands to get married.

He says he hopes the bill acts as a wake-up call to Australian politicians to legalise gay marriage.
