Government announces review of fire service

4:39 pm on 9 August 2012

The Government has announced a review of the Fire Service, including its funding.

It says an independent panel will also advise on how the service can operate seamlessly with other emergency services.

Internal Affairs Minister Chris Tremain says increasingly the Fire Service is having to deal with non-fire emergencies, such as car crashes.

He says the review will identify any gaps or overlaps in services and assess funding so it better aligns with the Fire Service's work.

The panel will report back to the minister by December.
