Thousands of online accounts of New Zealand game players have been hacked in a scam that's hit millions of people worldwide.

Starcraft 2, Diablo 3 and World of Warcraft are among the most popular computer games in the world.

Blizzard, the maker of the games, has revealed millions of online accounts for the three games have been compromised, with hackers stealing the email addresses and secret security questions of users.

Internet New Zealand says it's possible the hackers also accessed credit card information.

Chief executive Vikram Kumar says users should change their passwords and not click on any links in emails purporting to come from Blizzard.
