Canterbury and Otago next in line for torrential rain

1:45 pm on 13 August 2012

MetService is warning that Canterbury and the Otago ranges are next in line for torrential rain.

The rain has eased in Bay of Plenty after a 24-hour downpour.

However, the front is moving south, with up to 100 millimetres predicted to fall in Canterbury overnight on Sunday.

The Canterbury Regional Council is telling farmers in South Canterbury and North Otago to move stock away from rivers and streams.

The region is already saturated after the recent heavy downfall so rivers could rise quickly.

In eastern Otago up to 80mm of rain is expected before 10pm on Monday.

Heavy snowfalls of up to 40cm are expected down to 600 metres in both regions.
