Fire largely destroys $60m superyacht

Fire officers are continuing to investigate the cause of a fire at an Auckland boat factory that largely destroyed a $60 million superyacht.

The fire at McMullen & Wing's early on Sunday badly damaged the yacht, which was just six months away from being completed, and the building it was in.

The company's commercial manager, Michael Eaglen, says it's a blessing the fire didn't occur while the 100 staff working on the yacht were there.

Mr Eaglen says parts of the vessel are seriously damaged, while other parts got off lightly.

He says the company will be meeting with its insurers to decide whether to repair the damage or start again from scratch.
