5:50 pm on 14 August 2012

One person has died after an outbreak of Meningococcal disease in Manawatu.

The Midcentral District Health Board says three people have caught the disease in the past three weeks and one of them has since died.

The health board says there's no connection between the cases, which are the first in the region this year.

It's not known whether the three were vaccinated.

Last year, thirteen people died from the disease in New Zealand.
