Answers sought over death of baby

1:10 pm on 18 August 2012

The Action to Improve Maternity group says a second family is seeking answers from Hawke's Bay District Health Board, after a baby boy died in Hawke's Bay hospital.

The group says a pregnant woman was admitted to hospital for a condition unrelated to the pregnancy, several months ago. The baby was subsequently delivered stillborn.

The woman was visiting the area.

The case follows another in June last year, when a baby was revived soon after birth, but died 12 hours later.

In the latest case, Action to Improve Maternity says there were problems with the way the woman and the baby were monitored and the parents are still waiting for answers from Hawke's Bay DHB.

Hawke's Bay DHB says an investigation of the second death has been conducted, which has been provided to the Health & Disability Commissioner and to the Hastings Coroner. It won't comment further.
