TVNZ terminates contract with Agenda producer

9:46 pm on 25 November 2008

Television New Zealand is to terminate its contract with the outside producer of its Sunday morning current affairs show Agenda.

Richard Harman, executive producer of the programme and managing director of the production company Front Page, said he was informed in a letter that the show would end on 7 December.

Mr Harman says the letter came from Anthony Flannery, TVNZ's head of news and current affairs.

A spokesperson for TVNZ said a replacement show under a different name will go to air next year and details of its format and presenters are being finalised.

The state broadcaster would not say why Front Page was not in line to have its contact renewed if the new programme is to be made independently.

Front Page said at least two staff will lose their jobs once the contract for Agenda is terminated and a number of freelancers will also be affected.

The company says TVNZ offered it no reason for the contract being terminated.
