Flooding closes North Otago roads

10:15 pm on 20 August 2012

Heavy rain has eased in Otago but motorists are still being warned about hazardous roads in the region.

The Waitaki District Council says 35 roads are closed throughout the region due to severe flooding and landslides on Monday, and there are a further 44 warnings for flooding.

The council's emergency services manager, Chris Raine, says there is a lot of water on paddocks and a number of farms are cut off from the road.

There is flooding around the Kakanui River, but water levels are beginning to drop steadily.

Anyone facing difficulties should contact the council for assistance.

The New Zealand Transport Agency is warning motorists to take care on State Highway 1 between Oamaru and Pukeuri and on State Highway 88 at St Leonards between Dunedin and Port Chalmers due to surface flooding.
