Sharp rise in state-house evictions

The number of people being evicted from state houses has risen sharply.

Housing New Zealand figures for the year to the end of June show that 312 state housing tenants were told to leavem for lying about their circumstances.

That's an increase of 30% on the 241 evictions made last year and 6o% more than the 114 made in 2010.

In the past year 120 people have been prosecuted for fraud, with three of those receiving jail sentences.

In one case, a couple was running an internet business from their property which was turning over about $400,000 a year.
