Suspected smacking cases up

The latest police review of child discipline laws shows the number of reports about smacking has increased slightly.

In their 10th report on the changes in 2007, police looked at 500 cases and found 23 involved smacking.

Three incidents led to prosecutions and 18 resulted in warnings.

The review period was from June to December last year, when there were five more smacking related incidents than in the previous six months.

The report suggests the increase is because more people are reporting suspected assaults.

Since the law was changed in 2007, there have been eight prosecutions for smacking children.
