A man who as a teenager killed a vagrant in Hamilton has been deported to Tonga.

The Immigration and Deportation Tribunal ruled that the chances of gang member Napoleone Vaitaiki re-offending were not low.

He was aged 16 and had been in New Zealand for three years when in 2007 he killed Lance Charles Kingi, who was sleeping rough in Hamilton, bashing him with a brick tile.

The same year he was convicted of four violent offences in the youth court but was discharged.

In 2009, Vaitaiki was was sentenced to two years eight months jail for manslaughter.

Four months after being released from prison in 2010, and while appealing against the Minister of Immigration's decision to deport him, Vaitaiki assaulted his girlfriend.

The Immigration and Deportation Tribunal ruled the father-of-two had no motivation to change his behaviour and dismissed his appeal.
