Comulsory Maori in schools not backed by Brown

8:06 am on 3 September 2012

Auckland Mayor Len Brown will not support a drive to make te reo compulsory in the region's schools.

The idea is proposed in a new Maori Plan for Tamaki Makaurau released on Sunday by the Independent Maori Statutory Board.

Mr Brown says he visits schools regularly and is impressed by pupils' grasp of Maori language.

He says he does not believe there is a need to follow the board's recommendation that the council should push for mandatory te reo teaching in classrooms.
