Police in Christchurch say a female hitchhiker has made contact with them after a public appeal on her whereabouts.
Detective Phil McDonnell says the woman, an overseas tourist, telephoned police directly shortly after midday on Monday and is safe and well.
The woman was picked up at Little River on Monday evening and given a ride to Akaroa where she spent the night.
Police are satisfied she is safe and well and they do not have any further concerns for her safety or wellbeing.
They are grateful for a positive response from the public and the news media.
