Three men charged over a crime spree in Wellington stole cars which they used in ram raids and also tried to burn down a police station, a court has been told.

Cousins Lance and Stephen O'Neill and Edwin Holthamare defending a total of 16 charges in the Wellington District Court.

Crown prosecutor Jamie Eng told the court on Wednesday that in May last year the accused drove to the Karori police station where they smashed a window and threw in three bottles containing petrol in an attempt to burn it down.

Mr Eng said they also carried out ram raids on the Billabong shop in Otaki and a liquor store in the Wellington suburb of Brooklyn.

He said the men also stole a range of other items, including flat screen televisions, chainsaws and gardening equipment.

However, defence lawyers told the jury their clients deny any involvement and the Crown must have compelling evidence linking them to the crimes before guilty verdicts can be returned.
