Motorists have reported a diesel spill covering more than 40km of highway in Taranaki.
The spill on was reported on State Highway 1 from Waitara to Uruti on Saturday
Road crews and police were assessing the stretch of road while Transport Agency staff were considering whether absorbing agents needed to be applied to make the road safer.
It is not known how the oil was spilled.
