Six new high-level positions are being created as part of changes to policing in Canterbury.
Following a district review, a new structure has been set up that will reduce the current four policing areas to two - Christchurch Metro and Canterbury Rural.
Police teams will also be restructured into four main work groups.
Superintendent Gary Knowles says the changes are geared towards crime prevention in the post-earthquake environment.
Mr Knowles says senior sergeants face changes to their roles and the new structure will provide six new inspector-level positions.
The new structure will be in place in late December. No stations will close.
