No justification seen for park ban

The Council for Civil Liberties says there is no justification for a decision by Whanganui District Council to ban serial sex offender Stewart Murray Wilson from its parks.

The council on Monday banned Wilson, 65, from 19 parks, reserves and recreational areas as part of a campaign aimed at shunning him.

It says the decision is necessary to protect the community.

Wilson is now living on a house on the Whanganui Prison grounds after 16 years in prison. He was released on 29 August.

But the Council of Civil Liberties says people who have served their time should not continue to be treated as criminals.

It says Wilson already has restrictions on his movements and the council's actions are recriminalising him.
