Horowhenua District Council says petrol that spilled across State Highway 57 in Shannon on Monday should be cleared away by the end of Tuesday.
The problem started when a tanker collided with two vehicles.
No one was hurt but petrol was washed across the road and the highway was closed.
State Highway 57 is now open, but speed restrictions remain in place.
