Post-mortem completed on newborn

8:21 pm on 12 September 2012

A post-mortem has been carried out on the body of a newborn found at a Lower Hutt property, but police will not release the preliminary findings while further inquiries are under way.

Inspector Shane Cotter says it will take some time to establish the exact circumstances of the girl's birth.

Mr Cotter says it is too early to speculate on whether any charges will be laid in relation to the death.

The mother remains in hospital, where she is being treated for complications related to the birth.

The body was discovered in the backyard of a house in the suburb of Taita on Monday.
