PPTA wants apology over 'shambolic' announcement

A union says Education Minister Hekia Parata should apologise for the shambolic way it announced plans to close and merge schools in Christchurch.

The announcement on Friday covered 214 schools, and indicated as many as 30 could close - although two might remain open under the oversight of another school.

The Post Primary Teachers' Association says there was confusion and misinformation about the announcement to the media shortly after principals were told.

The union says the information was far too sensitive to be dumped on people at a public meeting and the schools affected should have been briefed at least a day before the announcement.

The Ministry of Education says misleading reporting by some media caused confusion and regrets any undue upset or concern.

Meanwhile, PPTA president Robin Duff says it is too early for the Government to suggest such major changes.

"It's a moving picture and at the moment very, very hard to tell from the current distributions what sort of changes are needed.

"We're particularly nervous that trying to chop and change schools around and merge could be in the longer term quite dangerous."
