Woman freed after car, train collided

5:21 pm on 17 September 2012

A woman trapped in a car after a collision with a freight train in mid-Canterbury has been freed and flown to Christchurch Hospital.

A KiwiRail spokesperson says the crash happened at the Fraser Road rail crossing between Dunsandel and Rakaia about 2.15pm on Monday.

The spokesperson says the crossing is on a quiet road, and the rail line is marked with road signs but not flashing lights or barriers.

The nearly 300 metre-long freight train was travelling north.

Canterbury District Health Board says the woman is in the emergency department in a stable condition.

Canterbury police say there have been close calls before at the rail crossing.

Constable Aaron Reid says the train driver saw the car coming and was sounding the horn.

The KiwiRail spokesperson says its driver will be stood down for a period and offered counselling.
