Retailers reviewing sale of butane products

The Chief Coroner, Judge Neil MacLean, is commending retailers' actions to regulate the sale of butane products, following a review of deaths caused by inhaling the gas.

Retailers are reconsidering their policies for the sale of butane products after the review found 63 people have died from so-called huffing since 2000.

Judge MacLean ordered an urgent review of huffing in July, after two teenagers inhaling gas were critically injured when a cannister caught fire in Mosgiel.

Regulating the sale of butane products was one of the recommendations he made following the review.

Mitre 10 has since introduced an age restriction for purchasing butane products from several of its lower South Island stores.

Placemakers and Bunning's Warehouse are also considering regulations, as are supermarket chains Countdown and Foodstuffs.

Placemakers already restricts the use of aerosol products to people over the age of 18 and is considering adopting the same policy for butane products.

Chief executive John Beveridge says the purchase of butane products for huffing is not common in Placemakers stores, but says it makes good sense to remove the risk.

Judge MacLean also recommended research into huffing behaviour and education campaigns.
