A man accused of murdering a Porirua police officer has been committed to trial in the High Court.

Andrew Popo, 32, will also face charges of murder, kidnapping, car conversion and driving while disqualified.

Sergeant Derek Wootton was killed instantly early on 11 July when he was run over while putting down road spikes to stop a speeding vehicle.

Mr Popo will appear in the High Court in February where a trial date will be set.

Twenty-eight police officers have been killed in the line of duty in New Zealand.
