Companies that operate and design pilot-less aircraft say their use needs to be better regulated or someone will get hurt.
They say the small planes and helicopters are increasingly being used for photography, filming or surveying.
Operators need to get permission from the Civil Aviation Authority before using the aircraft and must prove there is no risk to people or property.
But a company which develops the devices, Photo Higher, says that is not robust enough.
Chief executive Kimberley Attwell says the aircraft are getting increasingly popular and could cause serious damage if used stupidly.
The Civil Aviation Authority says the current system is safe, but it is considering whether the laws need improving.
