A New Zealander arrested in Thailand for allegedly selling drugs is an "idiot", says Prime Minister John Key.
The Dominion Post has reported that German-born racing driver Peter Scharmach, who has New Zealand residency, was arrested on Saturday night after being found with drugs as he left a nightclub in Phuket.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has confirmed that a New Zealander was arrested and released on bail but says the embassy in Bangkok has not been approached for consular assistance.
Mr Key, asked if there is anything the Government could do, said he had not had any official advice on the incident, but added that if the person was indeed selling drugs in a Thai nightclub, then he was an idiot.
