Manukau will get 300 extra police - Brown

5:13 pm on 20 December 2008

Manukau City will get 300 extra police officers by 2010.

Mayor Len Brown says the Government has given him an assurance it will deliver on a promise to boost police numbers in the area.

Mr Brown met Prime Minister John Key and Police Minister Judith Collins for 45 minutes on Friday.

He said he had a strong message for Mr Key on where the extra police officers should go.

He said they were needed to make up a drug squad to do away with the district's "tinny houses" and P-labs and to heighten police presence on the streets.

He said Mr Key and Ms Collins assured him that was also their primary focus.

Mr Brown called the meeting to discuss the Government's promise of extra police in the Counties Manukau district, liquor licensing, drug problems and the need for more early childhood centres.

Mr Brown says he was assured the Government would quickly establish a team to focus on the local drug trade.

He said the extra officers were a good start, but the involvement of government agencies, youth workers and the community itself was also needed.

Mr Key said the Maori Party could play an important role in helping fix the problems facing South Auckland.
