A Southland couple who continued to work while receiving Accident Compensation Corporation payments have been ordered to pay back more than $15,000.

Carl and Haley Rutherford injured themselves in separate incidents in 2002. They continued to work various jobs while telling ACC they were not working.

In the Invercargill District Court this week, the couple admitted charges of obtaining by deception and were sentenced to 100 hours' community work.

Carl Rutherford was ordered to pay just under $8200, while his wife was ordered to pay $7600.

ACC says the case should prove to fraudsters that they will be caught.
