35 arrests at seafood festival

Police say drunks at a Kaikoura food festival over the weekend marred an otherwise excellent event.

Thirty-five arrests were made at the annual Kaikoura Seafest, most for disorderly behaviour.

Local police called in officers from Nelson and Marlborough to help patrol the festival.

Several people were caught drink-driving, while others were arresed for methamphetamine possession, assaulting police and fighting.

Tasman District police commander Superintendent Richard Chambers says it was disappointing officers had to babysit several festivalgoers who were so drunk they were no longer capable of looking after themselves.
