No parole for sex offender

9:30 pm on 29 December 2008

A man known as the "Beast of Blenheim" after committing numerous sex crimes will remain in prison beyond his scheduled release date.

The Parole Board has granted an application by the Department of Corrections to continue the imprisonment of Stewart Murray Wilson. He was jailed for 21 years in 1996 for rape, indecent assault, wilful ill treatment of a child and other offences.

Wilson was due for release this month after serving two-thirds of his sentence. However, the Parole Board said it accepted evidence that Wilson had a serious risk of reoffending if released.

He stands to serve a further four years, although this will be reviewed every six months.
